Since childhood , creating art has been an enduring passion of mine . I hope my art expresses this passion.
My art is about movement , shape , color and texture. I use a combination of oil painting and mixed media to
show my subjects and my reactions to those subjects . I often use collage , especially with colorful earth materials,
which I lay out to produce visual effects and textural variation .
I was born and raised in Tehran, Persia , but as a student spent a good deal of time traveling Turkey , France . Germany
and elsewhere, always delving into art classes and inhabiting museums and art galleries . I earned a B.F.A. in painting and
design in Rome Italy's Accademia di belle Arti . Today, still travel extensively, once a year to North Carolina's Outer Banks
and once a year to Mexico . A lot of my subjects reflect my travels, and I often work with shells and soils from the places
to which I travel .
I left Tehran after the revolution in 1987. to become a U.S. citizen, but both current and historic Persian themes still
find their way into my work . Although have an extensive portfolio of oil paintings, mostly figures, my current focus is
on mixed media and collage . This shift in emphasis is a result of my travels. About five years ago, I was visiting
the Emerald Isle in North Carolina's Outer Bank for summer vacation . During a boat ride/clam dig, I walked out into
a marsh on the intracoastal Waterway and felt the cold water, the shells of various types, sizes, colors and textures and
the earth beneath my feet . I experienced an epiphany then, feeling free, at one with my surroundings, and a desire
to embrace those surroundings and incorporate them into works of art .
My award- winning " Freedom isn't Free " is my homage to the Green Movement which took place in Tehran in 2009
and 2010, resulting in severe government repression . Many people in that movement were killed . All of my friends and
family were talking about it and I felt I had to paint something to express my feelings about the situation .
The painting moves from dark to light . The pigeons symbolize peace and freedom . The hands symbolize both help
and destruction .
" Pigeons in Cage" is a mixed media piece that tries to transmit my feeling about the repression of women . The
plastic net represents the confinement of women, as if they are being caged .
My studio is in Annandale . I typically create 10 to 20 sketches before deciding on a final composition . Then I arrange
material on a board, gluing them down, and either painting them or leaving them in a natural state if my intention
is to showcase their natural beauty .
I am an active member of the Art League at the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria and Fairfax Art League
and Art Space Herndon . My works are displayed monthly at the V. gallery , and annually at Artomatic, a huge art show
that might pop up anywhere in the greater Metropolitan area .
